What happens?

When we speak of mobilising a joint we are describing a set of movements performed by your podiatrist. These gentle actions are designed to restore good quality of movement to a joint. In podiatry this is quite often the ankle joint and some of the smaller joints of the foot.

On such occasions the person being treated may lie upon the treatment couch on their tummy. They will be asked to bend their leg upwards at the knee. Your Podiatrist will then support that low leg and at the same time take the ankle joint through a series of painless stretches until the quality of movement has been improved. There are no sudden disturbing movements. At all times you are in control and can stop these movements and your podiatrist will frequently enquire that you are comfortable.

It is common to find good improvement even within a few minutes but such is the nature of the human body that some stiffness will re-occur. This is usually over come by 3-4 treatments. It is also common that more than one joint is mobilised at any one session, frequently providing a positive acumulative affect that can last a long time. At Podia-Clinic we will sometimes include both the knees and hips as part of the mobilisations treatment, taking a holistic view of the body's function.
